Trike Vs. Bike

For some unknown reason, Reed never had a tricycle. He had a pedal-less ride-on but nothing else. I think he rode a tricycle at daycare and didn't express much of a desire outside there. Reed got a 14" bike for his 4th birthday and Cora got a low riding tricycle. I thought we were set.

Reed rode his bike like a pro the first few days. With his increasing confidence, he rode faster and less conservatively. Consequently, he started falling over and having some wrecks. Then he seemed to swear off the bike. "Maybe when I'm 5."

Cora loved her trike, but she, unfortunately, was too small for it. She could barely reach the pedals and couldn't get the pedals going by herself. There needed to be a "pusher." Someone hunched over behind pushing and walking. This is not comfortable, if you are wondering. Bust.

Cora's tricycle

One Saturday morning, we were taking a walk and one of our neighbors was having a yard sale.  Bob and I stopped to chat and while we were talking, Cora was examining a purple 12" Disney princess bike. The owner said, "Please take it. Our girls have outgrown it." I thought it was too big (advanced) for Cora but we reluctantly took it anyway after a bit of arm twisting. She ADORES it.

She really is quite good at riding it. It scares me how fearless she is. She loves it though, and it is much easier to follow her while she's pedaling the bike than pushing her on the tricycle all hunched over.

Here's a video of her in action. This was obviously a few weeks ago, seeing that she's wearing a fleece. It's been far to warm lately for that kind of attire.

I guess the bike is the winner. If we can get Reed back on his bike, we can having a little cycling caravan around the neighborhood.
