Mobility

Kate continues to change so fast. This morning I went to get her out of her crib and she was sitting up. This shouldn't be a surprise to me. She sits up all the time. She gets in and out of sitting a lot. But somehow these milestones always strike me more when I see that there is absolutely no outside influence. I think my reaction was the same each time I discovered Reed and Cora sitting or standing for the first time in the crib. It stops me in my tracks and makes me realize this skill was completely achieved on their own. They weren't assisted by a pile of blankets, a sibling, an eager mother, etc. All that is there is a crib mattress and a baby.

Shortly before I took this photo, she was trying to pull herself up on the wooden chair behind her. She was climbing her hands up the spindles on the side trying to get off her bottom. She managed to get herself into the kneeling position which definitely pleased her.

Her mobility is improving, although it is still mostly backward movement. She typically scoots herself until she's trapped against or under an object. She squeals for help and the whole process starts over from a new central position in the room.

I pray for her normal development but fear the day when I have three truly mobile kids. I picture them all darting in opposite directions in a public place. Reed and Cora have become good listeners, in general, when I take them out so it shouldn't be so bad. I guess I'll just need to wait and see if Kate is the fearless, dare devil her siblings were.

Half A Year?!

How time passes so quickly is always a bit baffling to me. My itsy, bitsy, teeny, tiny baby that I JUST brought home from the hospital is six months old! That can't be. I mean, look at her; she just lays there. Oh wait, no she doesn't. Actually, Bob, I think she's halfway under the couch again. Can you pull her out before she hurts herself? Thanks.

What was I saying? Oh yes, time passes. So what's new with our dear little Katherine? Almost everything it seems.

She's sitting.
She's rolling.
She's eating.
She's on her knees.
She's got her yoga moves--plank and downward-facing dog.
She almost has the transition from on her hands and knees to the sitting position.

I blink my eyes and there it is.

Watch out Mommy, I'll be crawling soon!

Cora, do I look like a dog? STOP petting me!

This is getting fun, especially when I hop my back legs like a frog.

Her 6-month checkup was today and everything is on course. I think I answered yes to almost every question they asked about her development. No teeth yet though. I want to say that Reed and Cora didn't have their first bottom teeth yet either at this time.

Here's her stats for my records:

Maintaining her growth curve...
Weight: 14 lbs, 13 ozs. (25-50 percentile)
Height: 27.5 inches (95-98 percentile)

Halloween 2012

Another fun Halloween has come and gone. There was much anticipation this year by both Reed and Cora, and I do think that it met or exceeded their expectations.

Vampire Reed and Lady Bug Girl Cora

Penguin Kate

First stop was to see Grandma and Grandpa Mihelich, always a fun way to kick off the Halloween festivities. Next, we headed over to visit their cousins, Mason and Porter, and to trick-or-treat a while with them in their neighborhood.

After we grabbed some dinner, we headed back to our neighborhood to trick-or-treat with some of their buddies, Zeke, Mathias, and Nina.

The tradition of the baby penguin lives on. Here's a little side-by-side comparison of the kids. Sorry I really love to do this. Reed and Kate are almost 6 months and Cora is almost 5 months old in these photos.

Fall Leaves

What's more fun on a nice fall afternoon than rolling around in the leaves? Not much for the 4 and under crowd. They could have done this all day long.

It's been less than a week since we took this video, but I am already longing for a day like this when we can go without coats again.

Solids for Kate

We are approaching Kate's 6 month milestone, her half birthday! She has been thriving on her diet of breastmilk, breastmilk, and more breastmilk, but her interest has been growing in what we are eating. Last week we took the big leap to infant oatmeal. The reception? Luke warm.

I can't say I blame her.

Love at first bite? Maybe not.

This spoon is pretty good though.

We've been taking it slow. I typically only feed her a tablespoon or two of cereal, and it hasn't been every day. Her enthusiasm is definitely growing; I have seen. I think the veggies that are coming may have more allure.

Haunted House

We've had Halloween and all things spooky on the brain around here lately. Here is Reed's latest drawing of a haunted house with 3 bats flying overhead.

Spooky!

Pumpkin Carving

The weather was gorgeous on Sunday so we decided to carve the pumpkins outside in the afternoon.

Cut off the tops

Scoop out the guts

Carve some faces

Prop up a cute baby

Light the jack-o-lanterns and enjoy!
